About

The Great Adventure Lab is an after-school science enrichment program offering our classes in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We’ve taught thousands of kids how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). We also teach science, engineering, electronics...and more! We do it all with SMALL class sizes with an adult to student ratio of 7:1. or better. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics irresistibly FUN for the next generation.

You can read all about our classes and birthday parties  at  http://thegreatadventurelab.com.  The site includes plenty of photos and links to videos from our classes!

We are an LLC based in Silver Spring, MD. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting.

Here are mini-descriptions of our offerings at Beverly Farms ES.  Please follow links for complete details, including photos!  Room numbers TBD. Instructor will send welcome email several days before class.

Tuesdays 3:30-4:30pm
Jan 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Feb 7, 14, 21, 28, Mar 7

We’ll start each class with a storybook and then do hands-on science

experiments to test and recreate story elements! For instance, when we read Jon Scieszka's The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs students test the power of wind versus our own construction techniques! We’ll also launch model planes, build and erupt volcanoes, and make our own “oobleck” (a non-Newtonian fluid—similar to slime)!

Areas of Exploration: Aerodynamics, Biology, Physics, Geology, Paleontology, Chemistry, Engineering

Class Format: Ten 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $165 tuition plus $43 supply fee per student; min 11 / max 14 students. Parent aide for full class gets free tuition.

We’ll use the Positive Engagement Project’s curriculum to build math skills using decks of cards.  We’ll play games covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percents, decimals, patterns, positive and negative integers … children will play appropriate games for their math levels.

Areas of Exploration: Math, Art

Class Format: Ten 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Jan 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16, 23, Mar 2, 9

Lego Engineers students learn and apply mechanical engineering concepts and create a wild amusement park ride, a go-cart, and, of course ... a catapult that launches Lego pieces! Students will  learn the physics behind levers, gears, pulleys, and other simple machines using LEGO® Education’s Simple Machines set. We’ll explore a new project each week and improvise on our designs to make our creations work in cool new ways!

Areas of Exploration: Engineering, Simple Machines, Physics.

Class Format: Ten 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $170 per student; min 11 / max 14 students, 1 instructor, 1 aide. Parent aide for full class gets free tuition.

Robo Challenge Machines, Grades 4-5

Thursdays 3:30-4:30pm
Jan 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16, 23, Mar 2, 9

Robo Challenge Contraptions and Machines are independent classes. Same curriculum, different projects. Take one or both in either order!

Our Robo Challenge classes are ideal for students who want more of a challenge. No more step-by-step directions and sample programs. Instead, we start each class with a programming challenge, then design bots to go with our programs. We’ll build and program cars, hexbug catchers, and more! Our Robo Challenge Contraptions class follows the same format, but with all different projects, including a marble shooter!

Areas of Exploration:  Independent Problem Solving, Robotics, Programming, Logic, Mechanical Engineering.

Class Format:  Ten 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition:  $180 per student; min 11 / max 14 students, 1 instructor, 1 aide. Parent aide for full class gets free tuition.
